The former Germany coach, who will work as a TV analyst for Germany’s RTL network in South Africa, told reporters on Friday he was prepared to wait for the right opportunity.

Argentina have both the hope and desire that they can break a 24-year-old curse by lifting the World Cup in South Africa this year, coach Diego Maradona said on Monday.

Maradona, who completed a two-month FIFA ban on Friday for making lewd comments to reporters in Montevideo after Argentina qualified for the tournament, inspired his country to the World Cup at the 1986 Mexico tournament. They have not won the tournament since, losing to West Germany in the 1990 final.

Blanc ‘good candidate’ for France job – FFF chief

Laurent Blanc is a strong candidate to replace Raymond Domenech as France coach after the World Cup, French Football Federation (FFF) president Jean-Pierre Escalettes said on Tuesday.

“Laurent Blanc is an exemplary man, he proved it as player and as coach,” Escalettes told French radio Europe 1 about the 1998 World Cup-winning defender who coaches Ligue 1 champions Girondins Bordeaux. “He certainly is a good candidate.”

Escalettes also cited World Cup winner Didier Deschamps, former France midfielder Jean Tigana and current assistant coach Alain Boghossian as possible replacements for Domenech, whose contract ends after this year’s tournament in South Africa.

Atletico fined 150 euros over Pellegrini incident

Atletico Madrid have been fined 150 euros ($224) for an incident during the match against city rivals Real on Nov. 7 in which Real coach Manuel Pellegrini was struck by a small object thrown from the crowd.

The referee halted the game for around a minute midway through the second half after Pellegrini was hit in the face but he was not seriously hurt and played down the incident at the post-match news conference.
